Win 98 Reinstall

By dbman ·
I have a Win98 pc with a lot of garbage on it, both in and out of the Win directory. I think the easiest way to deal with it is to reformat the disk and reinstall Win98. I would like to save all of the profile information for the four users on themachine along with all of the Explorer Bookmarks, etc. What's the fastest way to go about this?

Try this, copy the profiles directory in the windows folder to a floppy disk. Then copy the favourites folder. When windows is up and running again, recreate the four users and replace the profiles folder with the one on the floppy disk.

Hope this is of help

The easiest way to do this would be to:
1) Copy system.dat and user.dat to a floppy (if they are not to big) or another backup device. These are the files of the registry.
2) Rename windows to another name such as winold.
3) Install 98 into the windows directory (since we renamed the original windows to winold).
4) Once the install has finished do a find for system.dat and user.dat
5) Replace the system.dat and user.dat with the ones you copied to a diskette. This may have to be done at a command prompt. the .dat files are also hidden files so you may need to go into folder options a put a mark next to show all files.
6)If there is a profiles folder under windows rename it.
7)Move the profiles folder from the winold directory to thenew windows directory.
You are able to do this with the favorites folder to or any other folder from the winold directory can be brought to the new windows directory.

You have to keep the same registry files because if you do not you will have to recreate the profiles.
Besides that you can go to c:\windows\profiles and copy the user.dat for each profile. This is that users information.
Good Luck! and email me if you need more info.
