Win 98 will not logon after booting

    Locked

    by buckle ·

I have several W98 machines that go straight to the desktop without logging onto our domain. To logon to the domain we must select the “Log Off…” option from the start menu.

We have the “must logon to the domain before you can use this machine” flag set in the registry

Try deleting all users on the Windows 98 box. This should purge those users, then try that.

I didn’t think this would help but I tried it anyway and it didn,t help. We have no local profiles and have disabled password caching.

Do a search on all *.pwl on the boxes and delete them all. This holds all the local passwords on the machine so if they are deleted then it forces them to enter in a password.

Check your NIC cards. Are they 10\100 speed? If so, changing from Auto-negotiate to either 10 or 100 mbps might help. I don’t know exactly why, but this has helped me in the past. I think it’s either the NIC’s or the connection through the hub that causes them not to see the network even with the registry forcing the logon. Also, are the machine names unique? When ghosting images, I boot into safe mode first to make sure that I change the machine name. Just some thoughts. I have had about the same amount of trouble on the old Novell 5 server as I do now on the WIN2K server, so I doubt that the problem is server side but more client side. Let us know how this worked out for you. Thanks.

Don’t know if you’re trying to log on to Novell or NT and what protocol you’re using verify that if you are using IPX that your not set to AUTO for frame type choose the frame type that your server is configured to run ie 802.3 If you are running TCP/IP verify that your network information is correct. If all else fails try removing the NIC from device manager and reinstalling. It almost sounds like the network adapter can’t get loaded before the get to the log on part of the startup.

We run a WinNT domain using TCP/IP.
I have tried removing the NIC drivers and reinstalling them. I’ve even tried using different NIC’s but all to no avail.

No Windows or Network Logon Dialog Box at Startup (Q141858)

      See:

      support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?cid=kb;EN-US;q141858

The most probable solution is to delete the following entry in the following registry key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net

      AutoLogon= xx

Select AUTOLOG.INF found in the \Tools\MTSutil folder on the Windows 98 CD.

      Right-Click AUTOLOG.INF.

      -or-

Hold down the SHIFT key and press the function key, F10.

Choose INSTALL to remove the AutoLogon entry.

This may sound like an odd suggestion, but I have been able to get around the problem you describe by removing the check in the Log on to Windows NT Domain in properties for Client for Microsoft Networks. Reboot the machine, ‘course it won’t promptyou to log on to the domain. But go back to properties for Client for Microsoft and place a check in the Log on to Windows NT Domain. Reboot the machine again and you should bet the logon dialog box.
Hope it works for you also!
      Ken
