Win 9x won't install on brand new WD Har

By TomSal ·
I have an AMD K6-233 computer that an employee was using until the hard drive crashed and needed replacing. So I just installed a brand spanking new Western Digital 13.6 GB hard drive. The drive partitions and formats without a single problem or error, the BIOS detects it fine as well - automatically.

However when it comes to the part in the Windows 98 installation where a dos-like screen displays "Please wait while setup initializes. Scanning System Registry...Copying Files Needed for Windows Setup..." it simply stops. The hard drive light shows no activity at all at that point.
I tried this a few times to rule out it being a "fluke" thing. I even reformatted and partitioned and tried it with Win95 - same problem.

Would could be causing this? I have a department supervisor counting on this computer today.

Thanks for any help.

I have had this happen before. Go into setup and check to see if there an anivirus enabled. If there is disable it and you should be ok.

Ok!
Do this:

Get a Win98 boot diskette.
Boot it from it;
Type fdisk /mbr
then type fdisk
accept the large disk capability
delete all the partitions
reboot to the disk again
fdisk and accept the large disk capability
create a new partition preferably using one single partition.
Done? Ok!
Boot your machine again, go to the Bios and set (if you can) the boot to search the CD first (you can also boot to the diskette and select CDROM support).
Insert the 98 cd and boot the machine. The machine is going to boot to the cd and you should now be on the 98 setup menu, let the 98 installation format your drive and you should be OK.

Good Luck!

Have you checked the jumper settings on the new HD? Make sure that if the HD and CD are on the same IDE bus that the HD is set to master (not C/S) and the CD is set to slave. If these settings aren't correct, when setup goes to access both devices at the same time, it will hang. If the HD and CD are on separate busses, check the jumper settings anyway. If you can't make sense of the settings on the sticker that's on the HD, go to the web site, they usually have better pictures and descriptions.Good Luck!

I've had a similar thing happen. Setup would run fine until it started to copy files over. It would then error out. It turned out the RAM was slightly incompatible with the Intel Mother Board. It would work as long as the machine wasn't pushed hard. It needed to have SPD capability. So you may want to try switching the RAM out.
Good Luck!

If Setup is not able to copy any files, then it is most likely a disk drive problem. If it does manage to copy some files over it may be a video and/or memory problem, because Setup is probably trying to load the mini GUI. Some of the settings in CMOS can cause this problem as well as the video card and memory SIMMs/DIMMs. Try resetting the CMOS to its default settings. If that doesn't help, check any video and memory settings in the CMOS to make sure they are conservative (slow, no video BIOS caching, shadowing enable but no video memory enabled for shadowing).

Good luck,

Al
