Win Explorer hangs

By webwench ·
I have recently begun work in a small office with 3 systems (2 running Win98SE and 1 running Win98ME). The machines are networked using the basic Win Network client included with the OSs. There is no Network Utility software on any of the systems and all they are doing is sharing data and printers. None of the drives are mapped...the "back office" just has shortcuts to the "front office" folders needed. The WinME machine will consistantly hang when Win Explorer is used to access info on a shared folder on another drive. No error message, nothing not responding in the close program window. I have found that stopping the Explorer program from the close program window and then retrying will often work but this is hardly an acceptable "fix". I've cleaned up the start up tab in terms of extraneous programs loading but that hasn't seemed to help. I don't know where to begin trouble shooting this. Suggestions?

Thanks.

Which computer is designated as the server, ME? I would set the network up with mapped drives and the ME machine as the server with file and print sharing turned on. It's less work than you've already put into troubleshooting.

I tried this and the user reports that Explorer hangs and Kernal32 errors now appear. That machine has 512 in memory so I don't know why the resources would be so low. The machine I've mapped to only has 128 in memory. I don't know how to determine which machine is designated as the server....the front machine with 128mg in memory has all the critical data on it and that is the machine that is accessed the most so in reality that is the server....but as you can tell...networking is not my thing....any other suggestions?

CAUSE
This can occur if Microsoft Internet Explorer is damaged. Because My Computer and Windows Explorer use Internet Explorer, if Internet Explorer is damaged, some of the functionality of these tools may be lost. Microsoft Knowledge Base Article- Q309662 OR

This problem has been reported numerous times in MS's newsgroups. I have never seen an explanation as to why this happens but what appears to be happening is that Explorer is utilizing all of the cpu (you can run the system monitor to verify this).

A solution to resolve the problem is to map a network drive from the WinME machine to the Win98 machine and use the mapped drive to access the Win98 machine. For some reason the cpu utilization is normal under these circumstances.

My guess is that it is a networking issue in the WinME OS but MS has never addressed it.

Try the mapped drive and let us know.

Enjoy,

I mapped the drive as suggested and am now receiving kernal32 errors. It's such a small network with such low data transfer I can't imagine what would be causing resource errors. I set the system monitor and , yes, memory is crtical when the errors occur. This particular user keeps several apps open (Outlook, Excel, Word and Win Explorer) while utilizing data from the the mapped drive but her machine has 512 in memory and the system monitor doesn't report anything abnormal until Explorer hangs......thanks for your suggestions though. Any more?

There is a specific patch for the resources issue, it is either built into Internet Explorer6 Service Pack #1 or one of the two post sp1 hotfixes -- I just finished working on some antiquated equipt. and too crisp to look it up. I would like to knowhow they are networked together (hardware-wise). I still like going with
assigned addresses on small networks (using tcp/ip). I can: file share, share printers and
internet connections just fine. All of this is included with 95/98/Me. (If I have all of the
updates and patches installed.) I don't even have to have a server set up. Just a cheap hub
(I have a SMC Barricade. And an old hayes external modem.) You don't even need a hub if you wire everything right (so I've been told, I didn't have the guts.) If you have to assign a
machine as a print server-- well I got a cheap
"smart" hub. I'm booted up in 2K right now, will reboot into 98se and get back with you.

Checked all updates to IE and ME and found them behind. Updated all and resource issue seems to be resolved. Sorry it took so long for me to reply. Wanted to give it some time in normal operating enviroment before making determination. My ME user is very happy. Thank you.
