WIN ME install failure

By gilyo ·
I formated my friends HD and tried to install WIN ME. That operation has been done twice so far.

The install process works fine up to the last step.
It then stops and a window stating a "kernel32" error pops up plus a "runndll" eror. Everything freezes.
The installation process can't be completed.

I can't figure out what causes such a problem.
Is it the disk, the OS? or something else?

I need aome advice please.
Thank you,

wonder if you could have a virus?
to help, we need the exact error <program> caused an invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll at address <whatever>.
meanwhile, if this used to work with all the same hardware, you could check to see if BIOS level virus protection is installed...
and fdisk /mbr and also scandisk and have it locate and lock out bad sectors...
ME is such a pain. I would choose 98 over it...

Please add a comment with the system specs.

If the PC has more than 511MB of RAM, that can cause problems.
There is a bug in the W9X/Me code that can cause problems with large amounts of RAM.

Next, did you format the drive or clear the partitions?
When you have problems, it is often a good idea to boot from the startup disk and run:
fdisk /mbr
fdisk (remove at least the Primary DOS partition)
Restart the PC, and create a new partition.
Format the new partition.

Make sure that the RAM modules are fully seated and do not have any problems.

Another 'trick' is to strip the PC back to a basic configuration (Video card only)
and install any other hardware devices 1 at a time after installing Windows.
