Win NT Network Components Error *Urgent*

By XpertDragon ·
Hey All:

I am having a strange problem with Windows NT 4 workstation network settings. I am working with a Compaq Deskpro which has a built in quite crappy network card, but that is another story. I have recently added a 3com 905-TX NIC, and now the on-board card is out of the picture, no worries.

However, I am now having problems with even looking at 'Adapters' under network properties. Every time I click on the 'Adapters' TAB, I get the error message: "An error has occured while windows was working with the control panel file C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\NCPA.CPL". I know that the ncpa.cpl file is the basic control panel file for Networking settings under Win NT. I don't know why I am getting this message. I would like to wipe all networking components and settings and start from scratch...but how? I do not want to re-install Win NT (Last Option). Any Suggestions or help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Paul M. Chavez

Paul,
I believe NT doesn't co-operate well with significant changes to it's settings after installation--that has been my experience anyways. I had a similiar experience with a SCSI tape drive issue. The point is that NT doesn't handle changes tonetwork or other hardware level drivers which means that the easiest solution for you would be to backup essential data, reinstall NT and other software, and then restore the data files. Sorry, I know you weren't looking for your last resort to be your only resort.

Paul,

I've found NT to be extremely touchy about its networking configuration. You mentioned that the built-in NIC is "out of the picture." What, exactly, did you do to remove it? Check all of your bindings and disable or remove any that may still be looking at the old NIC, assuming you can get the cpl to open at all.

Also check the System Event log for clues that might be a bit clearer than the useless error message you get onscreen. I suspect that the cpl applet is trying hard to open some component that is now disabled, and that could be a beast to identify.

You might also want to look in the Devices applet for drivers associated with the old NIC and if any exist, disable them. I don't know exactly how the Network cpl operates, but it may construct itself by first enumerating the devices to find out what's installed. If something associated with the old NIC responds, the applet could have a problem opening when it tries to use that information.

Before you get into software to much
make sure "on board card" is really disabled!
it may still be using system resorces and NT
could have a conflict between them.(either IRQ or INT or software)
I would set up 2 this way they get there own address. PnP bios will sort out most address problems . set it up in NT. (NT will allow more than one network adpter) then remove the crap ! (or cheat and don't use it in your working configuration)
I've had problems with most types of so called "onboard card's" and find them a bad
idea every time I up grade! Some even when jumpered on the m\b as disabled, won't let go of the address,

Hope it helps

Hi Paul,

Try removing all services and portocols and then the adatper in network properties, so nothing is left. Restart log in locally and reinstall the nic and protocols and service pack 6a this should do it. Restart and join the doamin. If you get errors trying to reinstall the nic you might need to service pack the workstation before install the network services. Make sure you have the local admin passord before removing the TCP/IP stack.

Easy:
1. Uninstall all network adapter cards.(via network neighborhood)
2. uninstall all network protocols.(via network neighborhood)
3. reboot.
4. reinstall both the Network adapter and all needed protocols.(Win nt cd needed, or I386 dir onlocal station)
5. reboot.
