WIN XP blank screen after XP logo starts

By pablo3b ·
I am trying to finish building a new computer that had windows xp installed on hard drive but I switched the drive to a different motherboard. It was on an Abit K7? and is now on an MSI. I received an error that indicated the wrong ide cable (I needed an 80-wire for the ATA 100 drive.) Now the system only boots in safe mode but not normal. When startup begins the windows xp logo does its dance and then the screen blanks and the system freezes.
I have a cd-rw, zip, and an old 4.3Gb hard drive (ATA33) all recognized by the bios in their correct places. The CPU=AMD XP-1500 and the video card is a JATON TNT2 - 32Mb.
How do I troubleshoot the problem? Does it seem to be a driver issue? Graphics? The last driver I see before the windows logo loads in safe mode is AMDAGP.sys. I have tried to reinstall windows booting from the cd drive. I choose "R" for recover but that doesn't do anything, I am asked for an an administrator password (there isn't one_ so I hit enter and I get the c prompt.
Are there some xp dos utilities I can run?
help.

The quick solution is to install a frsh copy of XP instead iof choosing the restore option.
Choose to delete the existing partion and format using NTFS.
XP does a wonderful job of installing all drivers.
The hard drive you are using is not ATA 100 compliant so an 80 wire cable is not needed.
Good Luck

I'm having a hard time reinstalling windows. I try to boot from the cd but the system hangs after the basic driver loading at the "starting windows xp" text at the bottom of the blue screen.
I'll try a couple of things to reboot from cd again and see.

amdagp.sys seems like it is an old file from your once used via chipset, this may be the cause of your problem. Your system will probably just have to be reloaded, not recovered.

THe new system uses the via chipset. The old one was an NEC 300Mhz PII. I realize that I need to reinstall Xp but the install screen hangs when windows is starting (blue screen)

If it is hanging before the system starts, it is either a faulty install disk, or a faulty piece of hardware. If it is a hardware issue, and you have not already updated the bios, do so. If you have updated the bios try installing with the least amtof hardware installed, ie: 1RAM chip, Video card, Sound card, 1HDD. Then add 1 piece at a time until it hangs. This will work unless it is the videocard, which should be resolved with a bios update.
