WIN XP blank screen after XP logo starts

by pablo3b . Updated 24 years, 6 months ago

I am trying to finish building a new computer that had windows xp installed on hard drive but I switched the drive to a different motherboard. It was on an Abit K7? and is now on an MSI. I received an error that indicated the wrong ide cable (I needed an 80-wire for the ATA 100 drive.) Now the system only boots in safe mode but not normal. When startup begins the windows xp logo does its dance and then the screen blanks and the system freezes.
I have a cd-rw, zip, and an old 4.3Gb hard drive (ATA33) all recognized by the bios in their correct places. The CPU=AMD XP-1500 and the video card is a JATON TNT2 – 32Mb.
How do I troubleshoot the problem? Does it seem to be a driver issue? Graphics? The last driver I see before the windows logo loads in safe mode is AMDAGP.sys. I have tried to reinstall windows booting from the cd drive. I choose “R” for recover but that doesn’t do anything, I am asked for an an administrator password (there isn’t one_ so I hit enter and I get the c:\ prompt.
Are there some xp dos utilities I can run?
help.
