If this is happenning constantly. Back up all your data if the system lets you. Try doing a system restore to a date where that was not happening. Then update your virus scanner turn off system restore and run your av program.

If you cant run that spin the disk and start from scratch. And if it continues to happen then you have a hardware issue memory probably.

Did that. Downloaded updated virus defs at work and took home on floppy. After several misfires was able to get them installed. Scan in safe mode worked. No virus. Went to critical updates and installed (in between freezes) 5 updates. Finally had a driver update install to NIC and was able to shut down normally. So far, the computer hasn't frozen since.
Thanks for your response.

Try answer1 if that doens't work check your power supply fan, i've had that happen to me when my power supply fan went dead.

another thing to try is backup and reformat.

Did check power supply. Had intermittant speed up slow down noise. Not sure what caused that. After critical updates and driver updates, noise went away (at least for now).
Thanks for your reply.
