My Compaq Presario 2007US 512 mb DDR, 60GB HDD, win xp home SP2 stopped loading win xp. How this happened. my windows was on auto update and there was a message that Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 is ready for installing. However whenever I tried to install it (auto or custom) it failed to install. After several such events, I referred to net forums & came to know that it was a permission problem. As suggested in the forum, I allowed my self (Actually I am the only user & have administrator rights) full control in permission for ALL HKEYs …. Thereafter MS Win Installer 3.1 installed perfectly. on reboot after install, this problem started. Pl note following status/what I tried
1.windows loading stops after the screen shows soft blueish wide bar with “Windows xp” therein (gui loading/loaded?) & before welcome/log on options. It just does nothing. No activity, no response to keyboard. Mouse runs but nothing to point to/click on to. THIS HAPPENS IN ALL MODES, SAFE, LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIG,VGA,DEBUGGING MODE,SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING ETC.
2. just before system stops, a message box comes on screen with “instruction at 0x7c918fea referenced memory at 0x00000010. The memory could not be written”. HOWEVER THIS HAD STARTED 3-4 WEEKS BEFORE THE PRESENT PROBLEM. It asks to click OK to terminate or cancel to debugg & clicking OK or Cancel sent the message away. Tried to get information on net but not much. THIS MESSAGE STILL COMES & clicking OK or Cancel sends it away.
3. Reinstalled win xp 2-3 times from OEM Win XP CD which came with laptop. During reinstall laptop booted 2-3 times as is usual – under installing software command. However after each reinstal, when I pressed “finish” for completing set up, Laptop will hang same way on the first boot. I tried one more time but while set up was going on, I had to power off the laptop and thereafter it is not reinstalling. Copied files from OEM CD ok but then message came that it can not configure installation or something like that.
4. Recovery consol is loading & I get C:\windows>, commands are working. I also did chkdsk /p & chkdsk /r 2-3 times. Expended mup.sy_ to C:..\System32\drivers.
5. read several forums including on MUP.SYS. In my case it is laptop and not many options in bios set up. While booting in safe mode, the last file shown in the list of loading drivers/files is “btkrnal.sys” & before that mup.sys. But thereafter laptop still hums for few moments and light blue screen with windows xp comes and after some moments, laptop hangs.Does this mean it is not mup.sys hang up?or it is?
I have very important data & configuration setting in laptop. Is there a way to restart the same windows xp? If I try to install a fresh copy of win xp (only c drive. No other partition) old windows will be put in a windows.Old folder but nothing will be lost of data correct? Can I delete old win folder afterwards? I read in some post that it can not be deleted.
I would like to try restoring the existing window first. Please guide.
What can I do to use recovery consol & how to get access to system to do restore etc? in Microsoft technical paper, I read that replacing registry is not advisable for OEM installed software. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/en-us.
