Win XP (Home) Start Menu

By peralot ·
I have a home-built PC with Win XP Home installed. (It's a 550mhz PIII with 512 MB mem). I recently installed a DVD-ROM drive (My old CD-ROM died), and ever since, when I click the start menu, if it's idle for more than 4 seconds (i.e.- my cursor's not moving over it or selecting something) it closes again. I'm not sure if there was some conflict because of hardware (although I dooubt it), or if the software (PowerDVD) might have been the cause. Any suggestions on how to prevent the auto-closing? Thanx.

What version of Power DVD do you have?

Version 3.5 has limited XP support if you install the patch from Cybervision.

Version 4 has full XP support.

If you have an older version, that might be the problem.

Also, if you did not remove the old CR-ROM drive from device manager, you may have registry conflicts that are getting in the way.

A good suggestion, but was not the correct sol'n.
Issue was related to the desktop settings- not sure why.

The DVD-Rom I got had a mfg. date of Feb 02- it has ver. 4 of PowerDVD, so should be completely XP compatible. Removed the old CD-ROM drive from dev. manager, but perhaps the driver wasn't uninstalled properly.

Strange thing- noticed that my screensaver would attempt to come on after 15 min, and then would disappear. Re-selected Win XP theme, and everything seems to be fine now. Can only think that WinXP theme somehow got corrupted at the time of installof new DVD? But seems to be okay with the original theme re-appplied.
Thanks anyway.
