Win XP Home updates & pwr off problem

By rcbundy ·
I am currently haveing problems with my WinXP Home. I am unable to run windows updates, IE basically locks up evertime I try to access the updates. I am able to access any other site I have tried to goto. Even if I open the browser and manually try same thing. I also have problems shutting down the pc, it hangs after I do start, shutdown requiring me to press the power button. This is a computer less than 6 monthes old.

Check your system is in good working order by clicking Start>Run and typing sfc /scannow then click OK.

Next, run a virus/spyware scan(s). Do you have any diagnostic programs? Run them if you do - particularly any registry checking utilities.

Install SP2 if you have not already done so.

If you still have problems click Start>Run and type msconfig then click OK. Disable all startup programs you do not recognise and then disable all non microsoft services except any associated with antivirus/firewall products you have installed.

Also, right-click Internet Explorer and select Properties, then click the Programs tab and click Manage Add-ons. This will display all BHO's (Browser Helper Objects). Disable all BHO's you do not recognise or which are not verified.

Reboot and try to connect again.

Do you receive any error messages? Post them if you do.

Good luck

Try reregistering your security dll files. Copy the following into notepad and save as security.bat or any name with a bat extension. You can save this on a floppy. Go to START then RUN and run the batch file to reregister the security dll files.
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 mssip32.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 Dssenh.dll
regsvr32 Rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 Gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 Sccbase.dll
regsvr32 Slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 Cryptdlg.dll

I also had this problem...I could access all other web sites except for windows updates...My fix was the firewall that I had was preventing me from going to the windows update site...Try disabling your firewall and then try..Or if you do not want to do that, make an exception for that website in your firewall settings..
