Win XP lies about unread messages

By jeremy ·
When I boot my computer and the welcome screen appears, it shows that my profile has 1 unread email message. When I click it, it says that there is 1 new message in my hotmail account, but there are no new messages. How can I convince windows that i have indeed read the message and there are none left unread? Its very annoying.

Have you checked the 'Junk' folder to see if the message was filtered to there? That is what happened in my case with this same problem.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\<
email address> Message Count
Set this value to 0 will reset the unread-email counter on the Windows XP Welcome
screen.
