    WIN XP Pro 64 bit

    by doug m. ·

Has anyone tried the 64 bit version of XP Pro yet? I’ve downloaded it and am thinking of installing it on my new machine, an AMD 64 bit one I just built. I’m running WIN2K now, so this would be an upgrade. Since MS offers no support for this yet I was just curious if anyone here has experienced it yet and liked it, hated it, etc.

I have not used this, but a caution. MS says it will run “most” 32 bit applications, and this is a PRE RELEASE which means it might have bugs in it. I certainly would not replace your existing O/S unless you are willing to lose or possibly corrupt data. Also, your programs will have to be written in 64 bit to take full advantage of the new operating system.

The other problem with 64 bit XP is that there are lot less drivers for x64 version so expect a lot of your peripherals not to work too.

I have tried 3 versions (builds) of XP Pro 64 bit (1218, 1289, 1433) and have had little trouble with any of them. Actually, you see little difference between XP 32 and XP 64 in normal operations. Most of my regularly used programs installed (AV was the exception) and hardware drivers were/are available with the exception of most printer drivers. The transition to 64 bit computing should be smooth once XP64 is RTM and the remainder of the drivers become available.
