Win XP Pro: Server Service not started.

by phil.hall . Updated 24 years, 9 months ago

I have a situation that nobody, to date, has been able to assist me with, and I’m hoping that someone might be able to provide a solution.

System: Pentium III 750, 640MB RAM, 40GB HDD. Windows XP Professional, full install from OEM CD, File system NTFS.

In the Computer Management shortcut in the Control Panel, the Server
Service is not started. I learned this by selecting System Tools, Local
Users and Groups, and then the User folder and right-clicking on a User,
selecting Properties and attempting to access the “Member of” tab. When
I do that I get the following error: “The following error occurred when
attempting to read the properties for the user . The
Server Service is not started.”

Any idea why this is happening? Or how I can start the Server Service?
It is not listed in Services at all.

This computer has had a complete full install from a retail CD on a
blank and formatted drive. All hardware is on the Windows XP HCL.

I’ve tried running SFC /SCANNOW from the START -> RUN command, which accomplished nothing.

Ideas, anyone?
