Win XP Pro, WLAN & AOL

by welshwood . Updated 23 years, 5 months ago

I have a Dell desktop and laptop, both running Windows XP Pro, and both connected to a 802.11 wireless LAN (a Dell True Mobile 1180 router). I (sometimes think regretably) use AOL as my ISP.

I want to use the internal modem on the desktop as a shared device so that the laptop, when roaming on the WLAN, can dial-out (yes – dial-out! Rural location so no Broadband).

I’m told I can’t do it because AOL doesn’t support Internet Connection Sharing. Can anyone confirm this, and does anyone know a way around the problem? (I’m not a network techie so “simply” answers would be much appreciated!!)

AOL do this to stop two AOL users (screen-names in their terminology) from accessing the internet at the same time – otherwise they would want double their fees! But I’m simply trying to logon the once.

Any help much appreciated.

Alan
