win xp program lockup

I have installed win xp and was happy with it til 2 days ago. Now I get program not responding for programs that were workin g ok.. It happen on restore system utility also. can anyone help thanks I even used the sfc utility.. If I reload xp will I lose all my settings and have to reload apps
