Win XP Remote Access

By TMan12 ·
I have a P.C running Windows XP home, and a laptop running Win 2000. XP Box is behind a router with private IP. I have port forwarding set on the router. I am trying to access the Win XP box utilizing terminal services client in Win 2000. I do not seem to be able to alter the port in the terminal services client. I keep getting a message that the p.c is not answering or responding when attempting the connection. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

The deault port that XP listens on is 3389. This can be changed via registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber

You should be able to follow your IP number on the Client for the connect with the port number like 192.168.0.100:3389 using your public IP of course. You might also try the XP Remote Desktop Client software.

Here is a good tutorial on changing the port number of an isa server:

You need to setup a staic port forward on you router to forward all inbound TCP request on port 3389 to the internal IP address of your XP machine. Can you access the XP machine when your laptop is connected to the internal network? I just want to make sure Remote Desktop/Terminal Server is setup and running correctly on your XP box.

Quite simply it can't be done with XP HOME. Refer to url: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp

XP Professional includes Remote Desktop, not XP Home

If answer three is true ie XP home does not have remote terminal services you might try using VNC (freeware).
Its available for download from sourceforge.net
