Win XP Slow opening files on W2K Server

By scott ·
We have windows XP Pro clients connecting to a windows 2000 server. Everything has been find until a few months ago. When trying to open or save files in office 2000 or XP to the server it is very slow to non functional. This is only happening for the most part at night. Any ideas?

do the xp clients have static ip addresses? are those static ip addresses configured in the 2000 server? this has helped me in the past to facilitate the tcpip-heavy demands of xp networking with 2000 server

This may be due to processes running on the server during the night, like scheduled backups or scheduled virus scans. Things may improve if the backup runs on a separate network segment.
