This could be a couple of things - IE not configured for the connection, a problem with the gateway or a DNS problem.

Firstly look at the IE settings... under the connections tab are there any dial up setting there? If there are any its probably best to delete them. If you are using XP at the top right hand of that connections tab you will see a setup but - click it and follow the question through. That should set IE to use your LAN connection to look for the internet.

If that doesnt work.. Hit start and select run. In the box type cmd and hit enter.
Type ipconfig and hit enter.
You should see your ip address, mask, and default gateway address. If the default gateway address is blank you will need to look at the settings of your wirless connection and the properties of tcp/ip. In there set it to obtain IP adresses and DNS servers automatically and try again.

Now if that dont work there lots more to try but I'm sure it will.

SP2 has a built in firewall, if you have it turned on go to Control Panel\Security Center\Windows firewall\Exceptions and make sure Internet Explorer is checked.

They both forgot one other minor setting, under the connection tab of internet options, there is a LAN settings button, click on it and make sure the system is set to auto detect LAN settings, then right click and repair the local area connection in control panel/network connections and try it.

Have you tried using the New Connection Wizard in Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications and then choosing the option Connect to the Internet? Sometimes this is all you have to do even if you have already done it once because something just did not go right and the 2nd time around it will work the way it should.
