Win xp to Win 98

By juliot ·
Hello I am trying to connect my laptop with Win XP so that it can share the internet with my home machine that has win 98 (not 98SE). I am trying to use a hub but everytime I try to connect both at once I get an IP conflict for some reason.

Does anyone know how to connect Win XP to a win 98 machine connected the internet using a hug?

This is a tech. problem, in search of a solution.

It properly belongs in "Technical Q&A," not in "Discussions."

Please re-post there.

Thank you..

You need a router

first is multihome the XP box [ICS works better if its multi-homed]. Second is assign static IP addresses on the XP box for the NIC that is connected to the hub. and the W98 Box [using the same subnet mask]. Third is on the XP box, the NIC that is connected to the internet you leave as auto discover [will obtain an IP address and DNS server from your ISP]. It is also the default gateway for the W98 box. In TCP/IP settings you specify that address as the default gateway.

Now, as another poster mentioned, a router is about the easiest way to share an internet connection. Turn it on, plug everything in, volia! instant internet connection sharing.

For about $50 for a decent 4-port wired home router, you can certainly save a LOT of effort and electricity.
