Win XP Updates

By jpyper ·
Everyone at one of our clients branches cant run windows updates, even under administrator. Windows scans for updates, start downloading it and then gives up half way and says unable to do updates. However, if the laptop users tries this from home, logging on to their domain via vpn, they can actually do this. Now I have checked with the guys who supplies the network, there is no restrictions on the proxy they use. You can however go to microsoft's website, select a hotfix file, download and install it, no problem. What is going on here? Any ideas?

They have blocked a port which is required by the update service is the obvious answer. Ask if they can provide you with a list of ports which they have blocked.

Same thing here error 0x80072F78.
I personally believe it is due to the new windows update software. I opened a case with Microsoft in Novmeber an jumped through hoops for a month, alwsy failing to even download the update much less install them. They finally gave up. Yesterday I set up two brand new Dell Optiplex GX280s with XP Pro SP2 and neither one could do updates after I installed the "New" windows update software. So I opened a new case.
I cannot believe there are not thousands of people with the same problem??
Help!

Out network admin brought his home system in today with the same problem. He said that Trend Micro PCCillin incorrectly identifies atl.dll in the System32 folder as spyware.
I have not had a chance to ask him his resolution, but try disabling antivirus apps before trying the updates. I'll post a comment tomorrow when I find out.
Since you said it is scanning and starts downloading, I don't think the following is an issue, but since Sept04 windows update requires ActiveX and at least SP1 to work.

Later.

I think you need to be really really specific with the behaviour of the failing windows updates. I just checked their troubleshooting site and noted half a dozen reasonable answers but I just don't know unless we can get some more info.

Also, have you tried to install SUS (software update services) on a local server and tried updating that way?
