Win XP upgrade does not see Win98 files

By simon@mzansi ·
I recently upgraded from Win'98 to Win XP without formatting the HDD. I cannot run any of my Win'98 programs but can see the program files (*.exe).There is no option to select Win'98 at boot. Current file system is Fat32.

When you upgraded, did you install over your Win98 windows sub-directory? If you did, then the ini files, registry, driver files, etc were destroyed.

Have you tried re-installing your old programs and seeing if they work with Windows XP?

Application compatibility guide for XP Service Pack 2 can be downloaded here:

How did you perform the upgrade?

Did you boot from the XP CD and install XP?

Or, did you boot into W98 and then insert the XP CD?

Or, did you run the upgrade Wizard to setup your files and programs for use under XP.

Option 1 would leave your program files intact, but not usable.
When you install XP, it throws out the existing registry and creates a new one. Windows simply does not know that the programs are there.
The only solution, is to reinstall the applications.

Option 2 should have extracted the information from the W98 registry and set up compatible programs for use in XP.

Option 3 works best if you are transferring from an old PC to a new PC.
