Unusual for Windows Xp. Possibly a driver not
shutting down properly. Load msconfig from
Start-> Run. You can manage services and startup
programs here. Deselect the more exotic one and run through the list and see if you can find the
program not releasing the OS.

Usually with Xp if a program/ service doesn't shut down properly you will get an "END TASK".

Also go to Windows Update and load all the patches.

My friend, there are a number of reasons that XP, both types, has occasional problems shutting down. Microsoft has addressed all of these and has provided solutions on their Windows XP web site. Here's one site to try;EN-US;kbhowto&sd=TECH&ln=EN-US&FR=0 and heres another: .
Copy each link into your URL and follow the links.
You do not necessarily have a virus!
Luck, Frank

I had the same issue, strange but worked. Went into device manager and disabled power management on USB Root Hub and the Network Adapter. Hope this helps.
