Win xp won't start...

By fidde_mannen ·
Hey, yesterday my desktop just stoped working...

I had turned on the computer an hour before it happened and everything seamed to work then, but when I restarted XP pro. my system some how crahched! When I first started the screen didn't react so I turned off and turned on the power again then it started off as normal until when the "windows flag" is suppose to come up! Instead of the flag a weird message or something looking like ms-dos came up on which it said Windows 98!

This makes me sick... Please help me out with this one. It's something totaly new for me!

// Best Regards,
Fredrik Frost

The only way that I can even begin to think of seeing a Win 98 message is that you have a 98 Floppy in the Floppy Drive that you'd give you an initial message of starting Win 98 and giving you 3 options to boot from in DOS with CD, without CD and something else. So make sure that there are no floppies in the Floppy drive and things should work.

If you have an XP Pro upgrade from Win 98 the XP files could have become corrupted but I honestly think that you'll find you have either a Floppy disk in the drive or a Win 98 CD in the CD/DVD ROM Drive and BIOS is set to boot from that drive.

If I saw this earlier, I would have said the same thing as HAL, it sounds like you are booting to a floppy or cd. Remove disks from drives and try again.

Check the drives as stated in prevoius replies.
If you still have problems booting then you need to attempt booting in safe mode.
Press and hold the F8 key after post. Select Safe Mode and see if it boots up. Hopefully you had a disk in the CD-ROM or floppy and already have this resolved. Good luck.
