Win2000 Pro and Win98

By David Baudais, ISP ·
I am trying to get Windows 98 release 2 to see shared folders and files on the Windows 2000 Pro.

I can get Win2000 to see Win98 but Win98 will not see Win2000 and it doesn't matter if Win2000 is formated with NTFS or FAT32.

How can I get Win98computer to see the resources on my Win2000 computer?

You need to set up shares on the Win2000 system and give access rights to the shares to the Win98 system. Hope this helps.

Ive had the same problem.

We fixed it by mapping to the share on the Win2k machine. You have to know what its called.

Go into network neighbourhood and right click to select map network drive. Enter location as "\\Win2k machine name\share name"

I usually share the root of the c drive and then let the security permission dictate where the user can access.

In order to access shares on a Windows 2000 machine in a workgroup environment, you must log on to the Windows 98 machine with a username that exisits on the windows 2000 machine. Each machine that needs to connect to the Windows 2000 shares must have an account on the 2000 machine.

from within the network applet, go to the "Cleint for Microsoft Networks" properties and check "log onto domain" and provide the name of ur domain.

Next, create a user on the DOMAIN that has access to these shares and log into the WIN98 machine using that account. Do not press ESC as you log in, this disables the network functionality.
