which services need to be running on a win2000 pc and which are unnecessary and can be stopped?

To be honest no two Win2k machiens are the same. Therefore it would be really unwise for anyone to state here a list for you to leave alone and tell you to set the others to manual as this could in fact cause your machine to stop responding completely.

One service I always disable is telnet and the smart card services. I know I never use them I know I can disable them. Do be careful however, with what you disable. If you're not sure, leave it alone.

I've already turned off those services as I too never use them, especially at home.
