Win2k Domain Joining remotely...

By jason.zondor ·
I'm having problems joining a w2k machine to a remote domain over a cable modem network. The server is w2k as well with static ip's. this server is running the DNS and WINs. I've talked to the cable company to see if they are blocking ports in that area, they say no.

I would say Virtual Private Neworking (VPN in windows) is your best way to go.... try creating an account on the server, allow VPN access to the server. Go home and create a VPN connection to that IP(dialup networking). It will prompt you for a domain login (almost exact as if you were physically at a LAN client.

Oepn Routing AND Remote Access from the Start-Programs-Administrative-Tools Menu
From the Action menu, select Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access.
When Routing and Remote Access Server Setup Wizard window pops up,click Next to continue
Select Remote Access Server
Verify or add protocols that are required for the remote client to dial into the server and then click next
Choose how you would like to assign IP addresses to remote clients.

Not having spasifics, I'll start with the begining. Can you ping the server/server name? If not, you may have problems with the config, modem or router. Check the IP addressing and Net Mask, (client and server). Also check your permisions and make sure that you can add machiens to the network, or is the macheine name allready existing? Of if your connecting via the Internet, are you on Privet IP addressing? You may have to set up extra items for this.
