Win2K Freezes Before Playing Sound Event

By qtzar ·
Hi,

I am having a problem with Windows 2000. Just before Win2K plays a sound associated with an event, like that played when you empty the recycle bin, the whole computer freezes for about 2 seconds.

The sound card in the computer is a SoundBlaster Live. I've reinstalled Win2K a number of times but no joy.

Any ideas anybody ?

Something seems to be wrong w/ your soundcard. You most likely either have a driver problem, a device conflict, or something is wrong w/ the card itself (physical problem).

You can check in Device Manager for a device conflict. Open up Device Manager from your System settings within Control Panel. First thing to look for is any indication of an error in the Device Manager, such as an explanation mark next to the sound card (or other device). Open up the properties of your sound card, click on Resources. See if it reports a conflict. If no, then a conflict isn't your problem.

Now you can try just disabling the sound card to see if the problem goes away. If it does, a driver problem is the likely culprit. This shouldn't be toohard to fix, download the newest W2K drivers from creative.com and install them.

If the driver download doesn't fix it pop open your case and first check if the card is properly seated in the PCI slot (you actually might want to do this step before anything else). Pull it out and reseat it to be sure. [Warning: make sure you unplug the power cable from the back of the computer. Computers w/ ATX power supplies *always* provide some power to the motherboard even if the computer is "off."You run the risk of zapping yourself and the computer if you don't pull the cord out first.]

If the card seems seated down properly, and the drivers didn't help, you could have a bad soundcard. In which case you'll want to follow-up w/ creative.

There are no conflicts in the device manager.

The problem occurs with both the native Win2k drivers and with the creative Labs Drivers.

The card is seated OK and I don't think it's a bad card as during my many rebuilds to try and fix the problem I installed Win98 and there was no trace of the problem.

Thanks for the info anyways....

Since that other stuff didn't work, have you tried putting it in another PCI slot? The delay to play a sound really makes me think its an IRQ conflict or similar (even though device manager tells you otherwise). By moving the slot its in you may be able to force W2K to assign a different IRQ to the card. If you have it in say, the last slot try moving to the 1st slot or vice versa.

More info would help,
How much RAM you got?
Processor?
Professional? Server? DC?
What other PCI cards do you have?

To save cost Soundblaster Live uses 'SYSTEM RAM' for most of its features and although Win2k is a much better gaming platform than NT4 it is still a lot more protective of its kernel then win9x. Creative labs states that SBlive loses many of its features in an NT enviroment. My aureal Vortex used to hesitate when i had 64ram and a pii350. Now i'm using 256 ram and Tbird900 no problems. You should try disabling the more advanced features from the card and i would certainly run the audio tests in dxdiag.exe. These tests allow you to increase or decrease 'hardware sound acceleration level'. Playing with this may help.(My aureal performed best at level 4) You shoud also check device manager to see if IRQ steering is working correctly, If not flash your BIOS and try again. With the limited information available i believe one of the advanced features of this card is attempting to access the kernel in a way that really p*****s it off. IRQ conflicts are very rare with PCI audio cards.
