Win2K hh.exe/itss.dll crash

By BirdLover ·
My Win2K Pro laptop installation has been working fine for a year. The C drive has Win98/fat32 installed and D is NTFS for Win2K. Apps were installed to the drive for the proper OS, but I do share projects and data between OS. I'm a developer andhave MSDN/VStudio, HTML Help Workshop etc installed. Recently I went to XML class and installed IIS, MSHTML3, XML Spy, and VStudio Service pack 5 and maybe something else. Somewhere in that mess any time HTML Help files were opened I developed this crash.

I've removed HTML Help Workshop, done an inplace upgrade of Win2K using the install cdrom to fix it, but that didn't help. I reinstalled Win2K SP1 and that didn't help, then downloaded andinstalled Win2K SP2 and the problem still happens. My user has admin group privileges and I'm also the administrator, but didn't logon to admin when performing the above.

I've read Q201420, Q268353, and several other articles in the KnowledgeBase without any joy. I'm ready to wipe Win2K off the HD but wondered if anyone has other ideas to try before doing that. Nothing I try even changes the crash location.

Interesting, since I have a similar setup on my home system. I'll be tracking progress on this one. There is a problem report in the KB that describes a problem with these specific files as a result of service pack 3 components installed on VisualSource Safe (a part of Visual Studio). Check out article Q234526 - if it isn't the answer, I think it will give you good clues to what else might work. Good luck!

Yikes! If some software didn't handle the install correctly and the inplace upgrade and service packs didn't catch it either I'd expect a lot more people to complain. I'll need more help, probably from MS - who have already been presented with the problem and not answered acceptably.

Win2K hh.exe/itss.dll crash

My issue has been resolved thru Microsoft's free support - at last! The solution is in Q196067 which is very poorly keyworded and not cross-referenced nearly enough.

I hope my posting this will help others. I will not award points for any further comments on this issue. Following is the body of the support engineer's last suggestions:

I queried our database, and find that some similar issues are resolved by deleting a file named HH.DAT which is used to save settings. This file will be automatically rebuilt. I recommend that you search for this file and delete all HH.DAT if multiple copies exist. Restart the computer, try again. What is the result?

If it still doesn?t help, I recommend that we delete the following files and regain it from Windows 2000 disc.

1. Click Start -> Search -> For Files or Folders.
2. Click the Tools menu and select Folder Options.
3. Select the View tab.
4. Uncheck ?Show Hidden files and folders? and ?Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)?.
5. Click OK
6. Input the following filenames (6 files in total) in ?Search for file or folders named?.

HH.EXE HH.DAT HHCOLREG.DAT HHCTRL.OCX ITSS.DLL ITIRCL.DLL

7. Select My Computer in the dropdown menu of Look in.
8. Click Search Now.
9. Delete all occurrences of these files.
10. Now, it will prompt you to insert Windows 2000 disc to restore these files. Please insert Windows 2000 disc and finish it.

11. Restart the computer.
