Win2k NT4 slow copy between platforms

By rmarsett ·
I have two Compaq Proliant 3000 with the standard 9 GB drives. One has Win2k the other has NT4. Both have most up to date SP and drivers for the entire system. When I back up or copy anything from an NT4 box to the 2k box it is slower then frozen pond water. This is the case when I try and move, copy, backup anything that would involve a file coming or going cross platforms. I need help, I can't be the only one with this problem.

Do you have any file compression? NT to 2000 is still new but I believe I have heard that it may be buggy.

Is the network connection set as autodetect for speed & duplex? I definitely recommend hardcoding it at full speed / half duplex for testing.

May be a security issue. For testing, create an account on both machines [or login to the domain as the same user] and see if the copy goes any faster. You may also want to make that user a local Admin on both systems. Try the copy again after this is setup and see if the copy goes any faster .

I have heard of a problem copying between the two when both source & destination are NTFS compressed directories and the NT machine is sp4 or below. If this doesn't apply please give more info on source & destination. NTFS, FAT, FAT32, cluster size. Also some more info on network connection. Protocol, media, speed, duplex, NICs, same or different subnet, HUB or Switch. Are both servers, w2kpro, NT wrkstn ? With more info someone will solve this for you.

I have seen timing conflicts with 100base-t adapters and hubs that resulted in transfer speeds equal to a 14.4k modem connection. Try dropping both machines to 10base-t and see if the speed dramaticly improves. If it does, try a differnt brand switch between these two devices. The timing conflict is usually between the adapter and hub.
