WIN2K Pro Printer Setup

By anna.duarte ·
I'm setting up several WIN2K Pro workstations in our training lab. These workstations will have multiple users using them. Does anyone
know if I can just add the printer once to each of the workstations, or do I have to setup the printer for each user when they login for the first time. The particular printer is a network printer. I heard that you should be only have to add the printer once to each workstation under the administrator profile. If this is true, how do I do that. If not, whatis the best way to do this.

Here is the way I recommend preping a system. Log on as the admin and configure it the way you want it. (Shortcuts, installed apps, network drives and printers) Then copy the profile over the "default user" profile. Now when someone who doesnt have a profile logs in, the profile gets built from the Default User profile. Presto- the new user, gets the exact profile you wanted.

The printer should be set up once as a print server (a single machine with a shared print device). Configure the printer as you want it on the server. Share the printer.

Log on as administrator to each workstation and either find the shared printer in "My Network Places" or use UNC path (\\computername\printersharename) to connect to the printer. All you should need to do is double click once, drag-and-drop a document, or right-click to install it on the client.

You will need to do this once for each machine and the new printer will be available for each user who logs on.
