Win2k Pro Svpk IV won't shut down

By f-178765 ·
I recently reinstalled Win2k Pro Svpk IV and the computer won't shut down. It just goes to the black screen with the command prompt.

I have reviewed the power settings in "my computer" and don't find any reason for the computer not to turn off. What am I doing wrong?

Provided that you don't have a virus or trojan infection, the most likely cause of a hang on system exit is an application which is not releasing memory.

Hi

What happens if you type

exit

at the prompt?

As stated previously, the computer goes to black screen, but doesn't shut off. Win2k doesn't have the most effective power control function, but should shut off with no message. It doesn't do that. I have performed a memory test using memtest86 and have determined that one of my memory modules is defective. I suspect that this is the problem.

I have performed a memory test using memtest86 and have determined that one of my two memory modules is bad. I will be ordering a module this afternoon. Apparently the module was causing more problems than not shutting down correctly. It was interfering with the modem and causing more than the usual amount of lockups.

Module was probably going bad for awhile and I didn't notice. It is now completely toast.
