Win2K-Programs not responding

By alex.lockhart ·
I run Windows-2000 professional on one of my systems. This is up-to-date according to the Microsoft Update centre.

Over time, the system response has deteriorated.

1) When hot plugging a USB-attached imaging device, the usual list pos up and invites selcetion of the program to engage. Howver the menu of possible programs is empty!

2) Various programs go "dead". For example Photoshop 5 just hangs. Re-installing did not help

Is there any easy way of re-installing the operating system without losing all the installed applications?

(If I had any hair left I'd be tearing it out by now!)

yes. it is callled in place upgrade. basically you just pretend you are reinstalling then it finds the old os and offers to repair it. all you programs and settings will remain. however, the version of ie will go back to installed state and also you will need to reapply your service packs. see search the knowledgebase for inplace upg4rade
you sure no viruses?

Thanks for the tip!.

I run the latest version of Norton anti-virus and it reports the system as clean.

I'll have a go with your suggestion when I have a quiet hour or two, or three .........
