win2k security

I have been given the job of installing a new server to setup our LAN. I would like to use win2k Server, but am concerned about security issues. Am I being perinoid is it that big of an issue anymore?

First off, all operating systems have some security risks.. if you decide to go with Win2k, just make sure you apply all current security patches and service packs (after testing them of course)... on a small network, one $50,000 unix box is a bit overkill.

No you are definitely NOT being paranoid...unless using your brain and being careful counts as paranoid.

Win2k does have some security issues, but I don't think that it is a poor or insecure OS. It just requires due diligence on the admins part. Keep up with patches, watch vulnerability reports and monitor your system. Check out Hacking Exposed or Hacking Windows 2000 for a great deal of information and security insight. (Great books, but after reading them you *will* be paranoid).

Good luck with setting up your server. Win2k is a good server OS, just make sure you do your homework...instead of leaving the door open and inviting trouble in.
