win2k server

By edmond_sng ·
Hi,

I service packed my win2k server with sp3 and now everytime I restart the machine it comes up with an error "at least one service or driver failed to start during system start up". I checked the event viewer logs and it says "WINS Performance Monitor Counters could not get the WINS statistics."

How do I disable this service so that the service failed message wouldn't come up again in future?

Please advise

Thanks
Ed

This problem is caused by stopping, and later restarting the WINS service. The reason the problem occurs is because the WINS counter library routine that initializes, and binds the counters to the WINS Name Server is only called once. Because the initialization/bind routine is only called once, if the service is later stopped and restarted the Performance Monitor counters originally bound are no longer valid resulting in the counters disappearing.
If you monitor your WINS server by running Performance Monitor locally, you may experience a memory leak in Perfmon.exe. You can reclaim the lost memory by quitting Performance Monitor.
Do not monitor WINS counters.
Run Performance Monitor locally rather than across the network. While you experience a memory leak in this scenario, the memory is returned when you exit Performance Monitor.
