Win2K server can't join NT Domain

By qb4006 ·
Hi folks - This is a wierd one!!!

I have a Win2K server that I am trying to add to an NT domain but it won't work. There is a DHCP server that happily gives the Win2k server an IP address. When I do an ip config /all on the 2K sever the info shows the ip address, wins info, dns info, and dhcp server ip address but will not log on to the NT domain. the PDC, DHCP server and 2k Server are all on the same subnet and everything in the network is OK except this one 2K server. How is it that the NIC on this server can get an DHCP address but cant communicate with anything? I can't even ping the DHCP server even thought I have a DHCP address. PS There is only 1 dhcp server 1 pdc and 1 bdc. The 2K server was going to be a member server. HELP!!!

Win2K server can't join NT Domain

I have found that if you are trying to add an NT machine as a member of a domain and that machine either had that computer name before or another machine did, the PDC will keep the SID of the last machine that had that name. You will then have to delete the computer name from server manager, synchronize (or wait for them to synch) the PDC and the BDC and recreate the name. Sometimes it works better if you create it in server manager, sometimes better from the machine.

Hope this helps!
