Win2k Server Service Pack 4 error

By fjaramillo ·
I am trying to install SP4 on a server that currently has SP2. During the install process I
get the following error:

"Access Denied" Error Message When You Install Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 4

Also event id 4373 is logged.

Thanks in advance.

I could not find the event ID but have a look at the free space available as well as the rights of the user you are installing the SP as.
If you are using windowsupdate to SP try downloading SP4 complete from MS and vise versa.
Also run windowsupdate, seems to me I saw a patch for errors deploying sp4.

Good luck

I have 580MB free on C. I tried the WinUpdate site but did not see any patches pertaining to the SP4 deployment? Any other ideas?

Thank you

From a newsgroup post:

"You may need to reset the permissions on the "system32\dllcache" folder. System and administrator accounts need full access".

Hope this helps.

Although this article referencesd SP3 Q826972, it solved our problem. We needed to reset permissions.

If you can still find it, I'd upgrade to SP3 first, and make sure all is well before taking the plunge to SP4. Personally, I don't think SP4 offers as much "patching" as SP3, and from what I've read, SP4 includes patches to all services for Windows 2000 (such as ISA, and other services you may not be running).. I've personally seen a significant amount of issues upgrading to SP4, and seen that SP3 works much more reliably.

But, if you really need to get to SP4, I'd see about cleaning up as much space on your C drive as possible. Sometimes this means uninstalling some apps and moving them to another drive, but you should be able to clean out your TEMP folders, and the old logfiles in \winnt\system32\logfiles\.

Hope this helps.

Access Denied is a ACL permissions issue and if your trying to install a service pack with an account other than the administrators account that has full access, you'll get that message.

try to login locally on the server (not into thed omian) and run the sp4 update.
