Win2k's appearance in Server Manager

By CuLizard ·
In an NT4 environment, does anyone know how to make Win2k professional show up as "Windows NT 4.0 Workstation" instead of "Windows NT 5.0 Workstation" in Server Manager? In other words, to someone viewing the network through server manager, is there a way to make a 2000 box look like an NT4 box? Just curious, thanks =)

Win2k's appearance in Server Manager

Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, it's hard-coded rather than a registry key so it would not be easy.

However, as an aside, a Linux box can be easily modified to report whatever you want - my Linux box currently reports that it is an 'NT v5.8'box. But, unlike W2K, I have the source code that enables me to do that.

I figured that Linux would be able to do something like that, but unfortunately it doesn't really help me... My only other thought on the matter was that perhaps some more clever coder than I could write an app that would intercept the packets requesting the OS type, and fake the packets that would result in it showing up as NT... that's a little overkill tho, I think =)

OTOH, I could put a Linux router between the 2000 box and the rest of the network and just let it forward traffic... hmmm...
