Win95 disconnects from network printer

By hiker ·
Intermittently, when trying to print an e-mail from Outlook 98 (on Win95), the network printer is disconnected and the icon is removed from the Printers folder. A message appears : Spool32 has performed an illegal operation. Details : Spool32 causedan invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll at 014f:bff9a3co.

Try the following:
1. Reinstall the printer driver. DON'T use the driver on the Win95 CD. Obtain the latest driver from the printer manufacturer.
If that doesn't work:
2. Go to Start -> Run -> Sysedit. Find the [Windows] section in the WIN.INI file. After Load= add c:\windows\system\spool32.exe.
If that does not work, do the following as a last resort:
3. Go to the the printer's Properties -> Details -> Spool Settings and check the box next to "Print directly to printer" and select RAW under Spool Data Format.

Do you have Netware Client software on your computer? I have had this problem with the printers dissapearing from the printer folder. When I reboot, the printers come back. After some investigation, I discovered that Microsoft was aware of this issue on machines with Netware Client software, and that they did not have a solution. I have upgraded the Netware software numerous times since then, and the problem seems to have dissappeared. If this is the same issue, you might want to make sure you are using the newest Netware Client.

Microsoft released an updated spools.dll for Windows95. Check the version you have against this:
SPOOLSS.DLL version 4.00.952 dated 04/17/97 86,528 bytes

and see if this version is any better.

The link to the Microsoft article is here: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q167/7/75.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=printing%20to%20netware%20server&rnk=6&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W95
