    Win95 & NetWare 5

    Locked

    by robin ·

Can I log into a NetWare 5 Server with TCP/IP without using the proper NetWare client? I want to attach to the network to enable me to install the proper client, which is stored on the server.

If so – exactly how do I do it??

    Thanks,

    Rob

If you have internet access on this machine go to support.novell.com and download the client. That way you don’t have to worry about trying to connect to the server.

Yes you can. As suggested you could go to the internet and get the client but you may also use builtin Windows clients to go to your own NetWare5 server.

Simply go to your network settings and add the “Microsoft client for NetWare Networks”. Verify that you have IPX and TCP/IP protocols installed as well and let the machine reboot. When you come back up you’ll go to Network Neighborhood and open it. (If prompted to select tree, etc.. you can just hit cancel.) Although you could fill this allout and login from here it will be easier to try from inside Windows, for your first few trys, till you get things down.
You now should be able to see your NetWare server. Double click and login… note that it is easiest to login as Admin user too. Note: It is helpful to copy your client to the local machine before installing, at this point. ALWAYS CYA!!

As someone stated you can use the built-in MS client for Netware Networks, but the MS IP stack will not let you connect with IP, you need to use IPX on both the server and the workstation.

The above suggestions sound good. To log in to the server you may need to set the context at the server. Be sure it has a read/write replica on the server and then set the context at the Console monitor screen. The MS client should allow a binderylogin to that server at the minimum to get the new client. Or you could burn a CD with the client and take it to the workstation with you…..Good Luck …..Chuck
