Win95 PC can't resolve DNS names

By dennis ·
How would you troubleshoot a Win95 PC that can ping an IP address but not the FQDN? What do you need to have in the network & IE settings that make DNS work?

Thanks, Dennis

Go to Network Properties - TCP/IP Properties.
Select DNS tab and put in the IP address of your DNS server.

If you don't have a DNS server, edit c:\windows\hosts file and add server's IP address and FQDN.

You should not have to make any changein Internet Explorer.

Go to Network in Control Panel,double-click Microsoft TCP/IP and then click the DNS Configuration tab
If a DNS server is not available, click Disable or click Enable if server is available
Set Host Name for DNS
The TCP/IP Domain Name is used with the host to create a fully qualified domain name.
Proceed with options that apply

When doing FQDN resolution, the computer will check the HOSTS file first before going to DNS. If you have the correct DNS settings under the TCP/IP properties and are still having problems, then check to see if you have a HOSTS file (hosts with no extension) in the c:\windows directory. If so, delete it and all should be well. If the computer cannot contact the DNS server for some reason, then instead of deleting the HOSTS file, add an entry to it in the following format:

www.xxx.yyy.zzz myserver.mydomain.com

where www.xxx.yyy.zzz is the IP address of the DNS server.

As in a previous answer, IE is just a browser and needs no settings. DNS is a different story. Make sure the DNS machine points to itself. Make sure the Win95 machine points to the DNS machine in Network Properties/TCP-IP

I suggest checking the DNS server to see that the A or Host records are correct. I also like giving the DNS information out with DHCP Options e.g. type 6 = DNS type 15 = Domain name. This approach saves configuring every machine.
