WIN95 Screen Saver Password

By SCELLIO ·
I am unable to change a WIN95 screen saver password. All attempts to change the password have failed. The machine does not have any .PWL files on the C Drive. Apparently system policies have disabled password caching. Attempts to "crack" the password from the registry provide a password that the user reports she had used at one time and as she types this in the "OLD PASSWORD" box, the system reports "INCORRECT OLD PASSWORD".

Download System Security utility that will help you to reset some of the system policies. Download from http://www.freedrive.com/ASP/PostFolderShortcut.asp?fsc=11668484
You would have to have a freedrive account which is free to get.
Good luck

Goto www.xteq.com and download a free utility called X-Setup and install it...

Open the program and you see system aspects that can be modified. Follow this path:

System --> Security --> Common --> Screensaver Password

Press the Delete Password button and you're done!

(I'm sure a quicker method exists, but this little utility can do so many other tweaks that it is worth having...)

This machine resides in a corporate environment and installing 3rd party tools or modifying system policies is not a viable option as they are pushed back down upon the machine during each sucessfuly login to the network.

Reboot the system and press F5 to bypass the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. Now find the [Screen saver] section in your CONTROL.INI file and delete it or REMark it out (this is the encrypted password). Then scroll down to the [Screen saver.Name]section (where "Name" is the name of the screen saver being used) and either change PWProtected from 1 to 0 or delete the entire section. Save the file and reboot.

To disable the screen saver's password protection, you'll need to edit the Registry. Start the REGEDIT utility from the Run menu and navigate to the key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

You should see a value named ScreenSaveUsePassword in REGEDIT's right-hand panel. Double-click this value and change its data from 1 to 0. Now the screen saver is not password protected.

I need to change it, not disable it.
