win95 software corruption

By kgall_gk4z ·
My PC would not boot up properly, called support and they said it was software problem and must re-install Windows 95.
My question is: if PC is turned off at night, can the software be affected by power surge, or more likely a virus/worm corrupted the software? Was wondering what to look for when I get it booted up again. Thanks!

If your computer was turned off at night and plugged into a wall (no UPS or surge suppressor), then there is a possibility of a power surge causing some problem. Usually it'll be a hardware problem, not a software problem (with the computer off).

If your techs have told you that you need windows re-installed, then you have a software problem. Are you getting OE or OD blue-screen-errors? You have not described the problem sufficiently in order to diagnose what to look for.

If the computer boots and takes you to Windows, then run a scandisk and a defrag, then test your software. If the computer does not boot (hardware wise), stops when it tries to load windows, then you should probably reload the os and proceed from there.

A virus/worm cannot affect your computer when it is powered off. Only when it's on. Again, it depends on what type errors you are getting to determine whether a virus or worm is involved.

On a general note, it is a good idea to have a surge protector of some type and definitely to have virus protection software running. Even when a computer is turned off (unless also unplugged), there is a possibility of lightning strikes, power surges etc going through the wiring. However, it is unlikely that a power surge would corrupt a single file. More than likely it would damage hardware also. Virus/worms are more likely than power surges. There are several virus programs available and some like InnoculateIT are free.

Thank you for answering as fully as you were able to with limited info.
While booting up, the PC gets to the middle of windows and then hangs, and displays an error message:
"Windows protection error. You must restart your computer"
After I restart, it still goes no further than the Win95 freeze, which after a few attempts I realized I needed to call support.
Tech support attempted to get me through the startup without success. We even checked the cabs files to see if there was a way to boot win95 from there, but no.
An additional problem w/ this PC is it has no CDRom and will not be able to quickly install Win95 from a CD!
I am aware we are behind the technology boom, and will be for a little while longer, so any suggestion to throw out the PC and start new is not an option we will consider at this time. Thanks for any assistance provided!!!

Hi
Without a full description of the PC that you have in front of you this could be just a stab in the dark. But you could do worse than check your BIOS settings, I have had this problem with a pc100 598LMR motherboard and AMD K62 450 procesor. I needed to reset the BIOS from scratch. after which the system booted far enough to get me into safe mode, which after closing down booted properly for a few weeks, never did find the original cause for the fault !!!
