WIN95 version A to WIN98 2nd edition

By sburt ·
I am trying to upgrade from WIN95 version A to WIN98 2nd edition and keep receiving an error, "SU0409". This happens right after the OS checks my current hard drive. What could be the problem?

Hi,

I do not know what your error means, but I was advised by the instructor of a technical seminar I attended (www.johnkalpus.com) never to upgrade from 95 to 98. He said you should always do a clean install of 98 (upgrades from 98 to 98SE are fine). The hard drive can be reformatted by using the fdisk command found on many boot disks. However, it will delete EVERYTHING so essential to backup your data first and have all your software to reinstall. Hope it helps. :) Crista

SU0409 can mean any of the following:

* Setup can not find a file (it should tell you the file name).
** Setup was unable to update your system files because of virus protection software (that you can disable via changes to config.sys, autoexec.bat, etc.) or firmware (that you may be able to disable through your computer's ROM BIOS Setup routine).
* You have installed Wildfile Software's GoBack program.

** My pick as most likely.

BTW, I obtained this information from the following(a handy page to have in your Favorites):

Are you using a Win98 SE Full Version or the upgrade? If it's the full version chances are that you won't be able to install over Win95 and you will need to reformat your hard drive to install it. (Back up your files.) If it's the upgrade, the install should go fine.

You need to disable your virus protection before you can upgrade - however, if you have Win 98SE, you might have a problem, as SE was written for new OS systems. Incidentally, GoBack is an Adaptec program - Wildfire Inc. is an Independent Software Vendor (ISV) of that program.
