Win95 Wallpaper won't stick!

By Blackcurrant ·
Hi

Can anyone tell me how I can stop an unknown startup process that replaces the win.ini file with a reserved copy. I wish to display a particular .bmp image. I do the following: I set the wallpaper in the display properties dialog box. The image will display for the duration of the session, but when the system is restarted, the default plain background reappears. I have also tried to edit the wallpaper entry in win.ini which reads wallpaper=(NONE) to wallpaper=C:\filename.bmp. When the system is restarted the entry returns to wallpaper=(NONE).

What is causing this? Can anyone help?

Thanks

My first guess would be a login script that restores system settings. Are you logging into a network? Do you have a user profile? The script could run from the server side.

Thanks for answering. No login scripts are used. Although the machine logs onto a network, no profiles, permissions etc have been set. One other thing that occurs before the GUI finishes displaying is that a box appears displaying a messagesaying windows 95 is setting up the following options... though no details are shown.

Try the following:

1. Boot the computer as usual
2. After Windows loads, log off the computer (for older Win95 boxes, it was Start -> Shutdown -> Close all programs and log on as a different user; new Win95 boxes is Start -> Log off...)
3. Whenyou get to the new log on screen, click cancel (a windows logon will appear if you log off, even if it does not normally appear when you boot).
4. Set up your wallpaper.
5. The wallpaper should stay after reboot.

Hi NetTek, thanks for trying. I logged on as a different user, set the wallpaper, rebooted, and the "Windows 95 is setting up the following options..." appeared, and the wallpaper came unstuck! If I find a solution I shall post it in the comments....
