Win95c Shutdown Problem

By dfra ·
A while back I heard that Win95 had a shutdown probably where it presented the Win95 screen logo but hung there and never shutdown. I heard there was a file download to fix it, can I still do that OR is there a way to fix this short of renistalling W95(as far as the 'c' part in WIN95c, that is waht is on the title bars of the windows)?
TIA

Win95c Shutdown Problem

by Vadhopper In reply to Win95c Shutdown Problem

The shutdown problems are long running problems with all of the Windows 9x versions. The problem is that there are so many things that can go wrong during the shutdown process that it's a tough thing to troubleshoot.

There are some patches to fix various problems, and the esiest thing is to go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and let that program determine what to download. Most of the obvious shutdown patches that are stand alone are fro Win98.

First of all try Microsoft recommended procedure for fixing the problem, by going to support.microsoft.com and getting article #Q145926
(you could also try this shortcut, but it didn't paste very well: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q145/9/26.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=shutdown%20hang&rnk=3&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W95)

This is a long process of going through the various things that could cause the shutdown problem. I have fixed the problem in Win95 with this technique about 95% of the time.

Good luck.

Try looking in the device manager to see if any devices are conflicting. I had the same problem and fixed a conflicting network card which cleared the problem

I have found two simple solutions. Although it might not solve the problems it does eliminate the error messages and scan disk start ups.

First, try Start Shut-Down and select Restart in MSDOS Mode, manually power off at DOS Prompt

Second, Select Start Log Off and then at the login screen press CTRL - ALT - DEL and from the task lisk click "Shutdown"
