Win98 and One IP by (DHCP?)

By dfra ·
I have a ten port hub, 10 win 98 and one line for internet. I want all to be able to access the internet AND I want to be able to play LOCAL NETWORK GAMES. Do I need anything special(SW/HW) or can I just use W98 and what about the IP Address (do not want to play through the companies network that is providing the DHCP)? TIA David

What's your internet connection? Cable, ADSL, 56K? The hardware for sharing internet connection would be a Router. You can do without this if you assigned one PC as a server and install ICS or other similar software. As for games, it's a little bittricky if you are not going to used an assigened IP address by the DHCP server.

You might want to get a little bigger hub sense one of the ports is going to be a cross-over and not able to be used.

Personally, In this setup, I'd get something like Winproxy to handle the conncetion sharing. Sygate is a good alternative forthis, it's just a little trickier to configure.

in this situation it's best to get a proxy type software (sygate or winproxy) it's dynamic so all you have to do is install it on one system, set the others to dhcp and it'll work.

as for the hub, chances are, though you have 10 physical ports, 2could be shared (one is cross over, other is normal) you can't use both at the same time.

as for game, you have to check the games. some game use IPX som TCP/IP. just make sure all computer are in the same IP address pool.

WinProxy from Tiny Software is another good one. Not too expensive and easy to configure. Now, as they said, with a ten port hub one is either straight through or crossover. If you have 10 machines AND an Internet connection like a DSL or cable router, then you will need more ports. However, you can get around this without buying a bigger, more expensive hub. Buy a proxy package and another NIC card. Whichever computer you plan on using as the proxy server, install the second NIC in it. The proxy is designed to work with two interfaces anyway, so it knows one is handling network traffic and the other Internet traffic. Any Internet requests are simply coordinated by the proxy server. Hope that makes sense...

Thanks, I noticed your email is associated with a school district. I am a teacher and trying to set up this type of project for my students. Your response sounded easy enough and economical. Any sights that provide this "How to do it..." t;ype stuff?
