Win98 Auto Shutdown Problem

by bhagerty . Updated 25 years, 6 months ago

I recently installed Win98SE on a new Western Digital hard drive in a Micron Pentium II 233mhz machine. The machine previously had Win95 installed, but the hard drive crashed. The install was sucessful, but the problem I am having occurs when I goto shut down. After clicking on START/SHUTDOWN/SHUTDOWN THE COMPUTER, the machine appears to shut down properly, but doesn’t automatically shut off, as it did when I had WIN95 installed. The monitor goes black, and the PC keeps running. Pushing in the ON/OFF switch on the PC does nothing. If I hit the reset button, Win98 starts up again, but it tells me that the system wasn’t shut down properly. The only way to successfully turn off & back on is to unplug the PC and plug it in again. When it is plugged in again, it automatically boots up into Win98.

Any suggestions?
