Win98 Auto Shutdown Problem

By bhagerty ·
I recently installed Win98SE on a new Western Digital hard drive in a Micron Pentium II 233mhz machine. The machine previously had Win95 installed, but the hard drive crashed. The install was sucessful, but the problem I am having occurs when I goto shut down. After clicking on START/SHUTDOWN/SHUTDOWN THE COMPUTER, the machine appears to shut down properly, but doesn't automatically shut off, as it did when I had WIN95 installed. The monitor goes black, and the PC keeps running. Pushing in the ON/OFF switch on the PC does nothing. If I hit the reset button, Win98 starts up again, but it tells me that the system wasn't shut down properly. The only way to successfully turn off & back on is to unplug the PC and plug it in again. When it is plugged in again, it automatically boots up into Win98.

Any suggestions?

Go into My Coputer, Control Panel, Display, click on Screen Saver tab. You should see a Power button option, click Power. See if Power Schemes shows Home/Office Desk. If not select Home/Office Desk.
Select the Advanced tab at the top and check to see if the Power Button options are correct. Sounds as if your Power Button option is on Hibernate or Standby.

Windows 98SE is not perfect - it still had a few bugs when it was released to the public. I've researched this problem as well; my PC did exactly the same thing. The solution lies in two areas. First, go to Start/Run and type MSCONFIG (and enter). On the Advanced Settings button, uncheck a feature called Enable Fast Shutdown. Enter again and reboot the PC. The idea here is to let Windows 98SE go through a complete process of shutting down all of the applications and storing the temporary information in a safe location.

If your PC still does not shutdown correctly, go to the Windows Web Site and download the latest Windows 98SE shutdown patch. This should end your troubles and put a smile back on your face.

Good luck,

BCR

First restart the system in safe mode and attempt a shutdown. If it is successful there may a hardware driver like a display driver causing the hang. Also you can try the common solutions like checking "disable fast shutdown" in the msconfig utilityor disabling advanced power management in the BIOS. (All as a test.)
