Win98/CD-ROM Drive Problems

By aplusweb ·
I just purchased a refurbished HP Omnibook from American Starlex for light use while on the road. All of a sudden, i started to have problems with the CD-ROM drive. First, the autorun no longer works. Secondly, when i click on an .exe file, a error message stating "handle invlaid" pops up. If you know why this happens or how to fix it, please tell me. For more information or specs, please e-mail me at aplusweb@bigfoot.com

Win98/CD-ROM Drive Problems

Could be hardware or software problem - so try one at a time:

If you have two memory modules - use one and see if problem repeats with either memory. If problem occurs with either module then memory is not a problem. If there is only 1 memory module consider borrowing from some one to test theory.

Re-install the CD Rom drivers for the machine and also ensure all patches for Windows 98 are installed or downloaded from www.windowsupdate.com including the service packs.

Try removing the CD rom and starting machine and then re-installing it.

Handle invalid is usually a memory problem or software problem.

Hope this helps as a first stage to try out.

I think that your answer helped a little however, since I have no modem in the system and the CD-ROM drive is needed TO INSTALL the software for a zip drive, I may not be able to install the updates so easily. As to the memory, I have only had this system for a month (just out of warranty) and am a little hesitant of opening up the case, especially because i have never worked on laptops before.

Simple, try another good CD disk and install a program (like a game or free internet or anything or copy the whole CD to c:\temp) just to verify that the CD Drive is operating correctly. If you can not run or copy this CD, then your CD Drive unit isfaulty.
If you are able to install/copy the good CD, then that CD disk is bad (that sometimes happens with heat/scratches).
If you know that CD disk is good and works on another computer, then the CD drive unit could be faulty or failing. They are calibrated units and some older ones start failing like older floppy drive units. Try re-installing the cDROM driver that worked before or simply replace the unit.

Uninstalling the cd-rom from device manager and checking for updates is a good way to troubleshoot the error message, but to ensure that your autorun works again, you will have to go into your registry and change the value of NoDriveTypeAutoRun. If the autorun of your cd-rom is not functioning, my bet is that the value in NoDriveTypeAutoRun will say FF 00 00 00. you should change this value to 95 00 00 00. The easiest way to find the NoDriveTypeAutoRun in the registry editor is to go to edit, find, and search for that exact phrase. If you're not familiar with the registry editor, then the way to get to it is to simply go to run and type regedit and then OK. This will solve the autorun problem most of the time on all 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME systems. Oh and...always remember to back up your registry before editing it because you may cause irrepairable damage and some programs may not work (just don't mess with anything you don't know and you'll be fine though) =)
