Win98 clients slowed after switching ISP

By grant.nygren ·
Hello,
I have an office with an ISP in the same building. We recently switched from an ADSL service to the local ISP. We are now on a subnet of thier newtwork.
Since they came in and made the TCP/IP address changes (gateway, dns, client and server addresses), all the Win89se clients have slowed accessing server shares. The Win2k clinets and Win2k Adv. Server are fine.
These 98 clients seem most slow in the first hour or two of the day and speed up as they go along. The ISP suggestedimplementing the WINS server and configuring the 98 clients for it. Is this a likely sollution?
If so... Do the Win2k clients need to be configured too?
IF not... What else could be the problem?

Dear grant,

Although it doesn't mention if any or all computers (servers & clients) reside on the same subnet together I will assume they are.

First verify if you have any unnecessary protocols running on the win98 clients such as NETBEUI and second ensure the 98 clients aren't don't have multiple gateways listed in the cards. Exit to a command prompt and type "route print" to verify previous gateways aren't listed in the route table, because you may have persistent entries. I have seenwhere they have remained after a switch over and they have wrecked havoc. Finally it would be prudent to set up wins for both clients and servers to allow registration of resources. Assuming the computers are on different subnets, networks, etc. Wins would be of terrific benefit to clients and assist with resolution for all.

Sorry if you do have netbeui running and its not necessary for any application you are running it would be wise to remove to free up resources on the local system.
